La Paz (nicknamed the city that touches the clouds) is one of Bolivia’s principal metropolises and the administrative capital. Sitting in a valley surrounded by the high mountains of the Altiplano it is located on the western side of the country at an elevation of roughly 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level. Considered an important cultural center of Bolivia, the city is rich with 19th century cathedrals, museums of artifacts from the pre-Conquest era, governmental buildings, precarious overlooks and colorful markets.
